Don't let Google rob you of your memories

Hello friends,

The other day I heard a song that was vaguely familiar to me and I wracked my brain, trying to remember the name and artist.

Of course I reached for my phone to Google it.

But then I paused, put the phone down and decided to let my thoughts carry me away, activating my long-term memory bank.

After a few minutes of stillness I found myself floating in first-love bliss during a sticky midwestern summer in 1984, lying in a field with my beloved, watching the fireflies flit by. The cicadas were singing and a there was an earthy, sexy scent of hay and wildflowers.

And the haircuts!

There was a reason I was voted “Biggest Punker” of the class of 1985.  This brought memories that reminded me of my identify formation: Who I was and who I am becoming every day.

Can you guess the song?

If I had taken the shortcut and Googled the lyrics right away I would have missed out on a beautiful sensory memory.

I encourage you to try this: put your phone down and let the memories flood in.

Let’s stop outsourcing our long-term memories to Google. Let's get out of our smartphones and back into our hearts.

Much love,
Christina
