Black Screen Friday

Dear friends,

It’s coming (cue ominous Jaws theme)…

Black Friday.

This year it will look very different.

It is not safe to stand in long lines in front of retail establishments at midnight on Thursday, and our healthcare workers are overwhelmed and begging us to please STAY HOME to slow the spread of COVID.

We are foregoing our family holidays and large gatherings.

This is an act of love for self, loved ones, and people we will never meet. It is also HARD, and a source of grief for many of us.

So let’s pause and take care of ourselves.

In 2020, we have a unique opportunity to pretty much ignore the ultimate glorification of capitalism: Black Friday.

We can’t go out, and most retailers have extended Black Friday sales through the whole month of November.

I have a proposal: how about celebrating Black Screen Friday instead?

Any by that I mean turn off your screens completely (yes, Netflix too) for the day, or even a portion of the day.

What to do instead?

There are so many options!

  • Handwrite letters to friends and family expressing your gratitude and love for them

  • Memorize your favorite poem. Or write your own. Don’t worry if it rhymes.

  • Do a silly craft project with no investment in the outcome. Macaroni and lentil art anyone?

  • Take a walk in a park or neighborhood you have never visited before. Engage your 5 senses while you do it.

  • Write a short story based on the wackiest thing that ever happened to you

  • Finally learn to bake bread

  • Clean out the junk drawer

  • Make a blanket and pillow fort (even if there are no children in your household)

  • Rearrange your furniture

  • Start a gratitude journal

And my personal favorite: Sit and do absolutely nothing.

I’m here for you!

Wishing you little pockets of joy even in this toughest of times.

With gratitude,
